Background

The Borough of Lewisham (officially incorporated in 1965) is in southeast London, bordered by the Thames to the north, with the river Quaggy running through it. Lewisham was one of the first boroughs in London to declare a climate emergency in 2019.

This watershed is inhabited by a large number of different species of wildlife whose habitats are in urgent need of protection, including ducks. During the field survey, large numbers of ducks were roosting and foraging in the concrete poured stream channel. Simple nests were made for the ducks, but they didn’t make a big difference.

Nest Play

This is an educational toy set. It construct shelter for ducks with modulars, which allows kids create different shelters as they want.

This toy set allows children build a shelter for the ducks. The main idea of this activity is that the children can apply what they have learnt, and the shape of the shelter is free, depending on what the children think is more important for the ducks and the ecosystem.

It also can draw people’s attention to this river, thereby increasing community awareness and conservation consciousness of local rivers.

Prototyping

The use of modular parts allows the shelter to be arranged

in any combination of different forms. The different

shelters also reflect different priorities, with the

aim of getting children to think and apply what they

have learnt in a hands-on way.

Modular Design & Imagination

With modular parts and connectors,

the individual parts can be combined in any way, and the look and function of the shelter is up to your imagination.

The design does not presuppose the shape of the shelter

and the number of parts is unlimited to maximise the children’s imagination.
